Drone Laws and Regulations: What you should know
Essentially your responsibilities for flying your drone are:
- To know how to fly your drone safely, and do so within the law
- To understand that the operator is legally responsible for every flight
- To keep your drone in sight at all times – stay below 400ft
- Do not to fly your drone over a congested area, never fly within 50 metres of a person, vehicle or building not under your control
- Ensure any images you obtain using the drone do not break privacy laws
- Avoiding collisions – you should never fly a drone near an airport or close to aircraft. It is a criminal offence to endanger the safety of an aircraft in flight
Finally, we all know how useful drones are on operations and some units may consider that these commercially available drones can be put to use to meet service non-core aviation requirements – photography, multimedia applications, surveys etc. If you are considering this, then you need to know that in this instance any drone use for the MOD, will be regulated.
In summary, drone technology is extremely useful, great fun to use and is here to stay. But used wrongly it does pose a genuine hazard to manned aviation, so make sure you know the law, stay within the law and fly safe.
9 things you need to know about flying your drone
- Drones can and do present a very real hazard to manned aircraft – pilots (including military pilots) have reported over 50 near misses with drones last year alone
- Drones (including model aircraft) are subject to the law through the Air Navigation Order
- It is your responsibility to fly safely and within the law – if you don’t (and individuals have been) you could be prosecuted.
- Never fly a drone near an airport/airfield or close to aircraft. It is a criminal offence to endanger the safety of aircraft in flight
- Keep your drone in sight and below 400ft
- Do not fly over congested areas and never fly within 50m of a person, vehicle or building not under your control
- If you wish to use a drone for commercial purposes (get paid) then you need to have permission from the CAA
- Ensure any images obtained do not break privacy laws
- If your unit wishes to buy a commercially available drone for Defence activities (photographs, multimedia, and surveys at height) it becomes regulated by the MAA and you must follow their rules

I am seriously considering purchasing a drone, so this was interesting information for me. I do have one question though. Do we need to get any kind of licensing or anything through the FAA for frequency management, or anything like that?
Hi and thank you for your visit and your comment. It would really depend on where you are in the world and how you intend to use your drone. It is always good to double check as the laws are subject to change.
But the general rule and good practice if you are purchasing for fun you no longer have to register your drone but you should always fly below 400 feet.
If it purchased for commercial use then it needs to be registered.

Hi Jennifer. I never realised that there were so many rules and regulations around flying Drones. I have been interested in drones for a while now, mainly because I have a teenage grandson that I know would love to do the same. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a weekend then with one of these magnificent machines and him. I decided I’ll bring him to my place next week and he can go through the list of models you’ve provided in this article with me, maybe we will find one that suits us both. It’s a great information for me. My son always asks me to buy the drone. But I have totally no idea about the drone. Luckily I see you post.
I know the government set many laws through the Air Navigation Order. I afraid my son will violate those laws. So, it’s good for you to talk about the responsibilities and regulations here.

Yes i feel that it is important to know that with a great drone comes responsibilities. But as long as you fly below 400 feet this would be a good place to start.
Hi Jennifer. Many thanks for the information. Gone are the days when we use to have big backyards, assemble and fly our model planes around unrestricted. I do believe that regulation of drones is important as there are many people out there that don’t always turn their brain on when playing with these hi-tech toys. Thanks for letting us know what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

Yes I feel it is important to highlight the responsibilities of Drone owners to keep them informed and build awareness of responsible flying. Also I feel that it is my responsibility to build awareness of safe flying.
Wow! This is crazy, I never knew that flying drones can be so hazardous to the elements or environment around you. I’ve always looked at them as toys, but that’s about it.
But now I’m looking at them in a different way, they are in actuality a real flying thing in the air which can cause havoc to others sharing airspace.
It’s good that there’s a law put in place to keep people out of danger and such. Thanks for the great article.

Drone will only become hazardous if the rules are not followed and people are not responsible. Other than that they are a lot of fun and can take really professional images.

This is a really important and useful post. Drones are great fun and the technology is so readily available that you can pick up a good one for a very affordable price. Thank you for sharing this information. I have been wanting to get into the hobbies of drones.
I didn’t know there were so many rules regarding drone flying. I’m glad I came across this information, so I’m aware of what not to do.
Went I was a teenager, I own the the radio controlled airplanes, along with the first designs that were attached to strings and could only fly them in a circle. Those little planes had real tiny engines that burn fuel. I remember it was very dangerous trying to start them as you could easily have your finger sliced off with the propeller. I had lots of fun, but that’s the closest I have come to owning one. Not counting those little micro choppers that fly horrible.
Do any of the drones use something similar, fuel, gas or propane. Or most on a rechargeable battery source. How long can they normally fly on the particular power souce?
I’m so ready to get one. Been thinking about it for days.

The drones do not use any fuel they are rechargeable battery operated.
Drone have come a long way from the days of those flying planes. lol

What a useful article you have written. Indeed, Drones are very useful. However, they can also pose a threat to aircraft especially living in a world that is full of terrorism. So, I think authorities have done a great job for coming up with all these rules and regulations.
And I think all countries should consider putting these rules in force to help protect the safety of aircraft and especially the people on board.
Flying bellow 400ft is a very good idea so Drones don’t end up causing any disastrous calamity to aircraft.
But my question though is, if I want to buy a drone, do you think I need to get some sort of license from authorities before I’m allowed to operate it? I would love to know that too.

In answer to your question firstly I would need to know what country you are in?
In many countries 400ft is the max limited without a license. I would suggest that you check with your local authority just to make sure.
